On a trip down memory lane, I went to visit an old friend in the west country – exceedingly good dressage trainer a protege of Nuno Oliveria in Porlock. Betty Howett – got her fellowship of the British Horse Society the year I was born. She is amazing; I had not seen her for twenty six years. Betty was at Porlock Vale in the old days and ran the Potomac Centre in America and returned in the early 1980’s. Over coffee we talked of old times, she is ninety years old and still teaches three times a week. I spent many happy hours with her in the 80’s picking her brains. From there I visited some old haunts and the museum at Porlock had an exhibition of stain glass and women in farming. I particularly love stain glass and didn’t realise that in AD 675 Benedict Bishop founded the monastery of St. Peter at Monkwearmouth in Sunderland (not a million miles from where I was born – although I was “north of the Tyne”) on land given to him by Egfrid (what a marvellous name for a hound) oops! deviating……….. then I went on to Porlock Weir thought you might enjoy the journey.
